For most Christians we understand our obligation to live our faith as a good testimony to those around us. The difficulty arises in verbalizing our faith in Jesus Christ. It is even more challenging to present Jesus as that Savior everyone needs. This is called “witnessing.”
As we continue to study the life of Jesus it might be helpful to consider how he interacted with people. How did Jesus meet people? Where did he meet them? How did he connect with them? Did he “go after” prospects or confront them? What happened in the conversation? How did Jesus bring about a decision? Interestingly enough, Jesus' family did not immediately respond to his witness even though it included signs and wonders to back up his claims. His brothers and sisters simply would not believe their own brother was in fact the Son of God. The most difficult witnessing is to our own family members, the ones we love the most. Don't be discouraged. Take extra care to be a credible witness.
Jesus' siblings rejected him in spite of his words and works though eventually we know of two brothers, James and Jude, who did believe in him. We learn from Jesus that the person who hears the gospel bears the responsibility for responding in faith, while the person who shares the gospel bears responsibility for communicating with faithfulness. Jesus made it very clear that it was the responsibility of ALL believers to be witnessing believers.
How many of us are prepared to present Jesus to an inquirer? Learn from Jesus how he witnessed to those around him, then trust him that, as we lift him up, Jesus will draw people to himself.
